Ready to teach: numeracy
TERM 4- WEEK ONE
5s frame activity |
ReflectionToday the students participated in the lesson plan above. We started the lesson with a counting by 10's exercise. Then as a class we went on https://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3564. This is an interactive 5s frame activity where the students have to say how many circles there are and sometimes how many squares are empty. I then used that concept to get the students to see what makes 5. For example, if the were 2 circles, i'd ask the students how many are left (3). Then I would say 2 and 3 makes 5. I'd continue this process a few times until I believed they grasped the concept.

Then as a class we recapped what made 5 and made a poster. Which is in the picture up above. This was used to model to the students what they were going to do for their individual activity. The students then went off on their own and completed the worksheet. Some students needed more assistance more than others. It was clear that some students did not understand what they were meant to be doing. But with some guidance they were all able to complete the activity.
This lesson met the success criteria in the way that the children were able to make 5 in different ways by drawing circle on the 5s frame into different colours to show the two numbers that make 5. This type of activity allowed for the students who can work more independently do their work whilst the educator assisted the other students who need help. There was an extension activity planned for the students who finished their work early but none of the students got to this stage.

Tuesday W1 Lesson plan
ReflectionToday's numeracy lesson we build on from yesterdays of using 5 frames. I started with the tens frames game which is an extension from yesterday's 5s frame game. I covered the bottom 5 boxes from the tens frame and asked the students how many and their response was five. Then I removed my hand, and asked how many. The students started counting from 1. I stopped them and referred back to us knowing the first row is 5 so we don't need to count from one, we count from five instead. Then I showed the students some more tens frames to respond to using the counting on method. The students seemed to get the idea of the concept of counting on as their responses were more prompt.

The main activity required the students to complete their own 10s frame book. This meant that the students had a booklet with empty tens frames fro the students to colour or at circle to match the corresponding number on the page.
